Christmas 2013 has past and a whole new year is just beginning. There's much merriness and joy to be had around this time of year but there are also lots of nasty cold and flu germs lurking around, threatening to turn our festive cheer into winter sorrow.
Did you know that Winter only technically began on the 21st of December? So, despite the fact that a lot shops are beginning to stock their colourful and flimsy Spring/Summer ranges, the truth is that Winter is only just beginning. The arrival of Winter brings with it conditions that promote the development and spread of viruses and unpleasant symptoms among us susceptible humans!
When we start feeling ill, one of the first things that many of us do is reach for an over the counter medicine designed to 'treat' our symptoms and 'fight off' the virus. However, by the time that we actually start to feel any cold or flu like symptoms, our bodies natural auto immune system response will have been triggered and it will already be in the process of trying to expel the potentially harmful germs from our system.
Interestingly, research has shown that taking certain cold and flu medications can actually inhibit the bodies own ability to fight off viruses. This may in turn prolong the time that we feel ill for.
The reason for this is that some medications contain ingredients that dampen our immune system's response to a virus and make it think it isn't needed to fight off the germs. But this is rarely the case as it is our immune system that can most effectively produce all of the antibodies we need to keep us healthy.
So, how do we allow our bodies immune system to do what it needs to do to keep us healthy without feeling awful in the meantime? One simple solution is to take care of the basics by wrapping up warm with a scarf and gloves, getting plenty of rest, taking in plenty of fluids, having soothing hot drinks such as honey and lemon and making a appointment with your GP if you are in doubt about any of your symptoms or if you suddenly start feeling worse.
little worse than feeling under the weather when your supposed to be
having fun. But it's almost impossible to escape those dreaded winter
lurgies around this time of year. Whether it's a persistent cough, sore
throat or a runny nose, it seems like our bodies are constantly being invaded by some kind of nasty germs!
A traditional Winter ailment that is reported to effect all of us at least once a year is a sore throat. This condition alone can cause a lot of inconvenience and distress as the throat may become painful and swollen making it difficult to speak or eat. This is also a time of year when a lot of alcohol is consumed and this too can make matters worse. Alcohol is known to induce a deep sleep where you are more likely to snore which will only exasperate a sore throat! Ridiculous I know, but it's true!
I've suffered with a sore throat on and off for many months now. Lot's of people have suggested trying warm honey and lemon but this always seemed a little pointless to me! However, I have recently tried this and to my surprise it seems to help a lot and is actually really quite delicious! I'm also going to be looking to try alternatives to my usual medicines. One thing that looks really interesting and that I've discovered recently is Ultra Chloraseptic Throat Spray. This doesn't claim to treat a sore throat but it should numb the pain and ease the discomfort making it easier to talk and eat once again.
So, with all this in mind, here's to a Happy and Healthy 2014!
